A jury at Birmingham Crown Court has convicted Sheraz Malik of two counts of raping an 18-year-old woman in Sutton Lawn park, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Malik, identified as an asylum seeker, was acquitted on a third count of rape.
During the trial, the court heard that the woman had been drinking in the park when she encountered Malik and other men. Prosecution counsel stated she was attacked by Malik shortly after being with another man from his group. Malik, who gave evidence in English, contended that the sexual acts were consensual, but the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on the two counts.
The case had previously garnered public attention, with protests related to the incident occurring last summer.
