During a recent podcast interaction with Sania Mirza, filmmaker Karan Johar disclosed that he underwent three years of voice and movement coaching as a teenager. Starting at age 15 around 1989, Johar sought to develop a more 'baritone' voice and modify his gait, which he perceived as 'effeminate.' He indicated that a coach suggested these classes to help him 'sound more like a man.'
Johar also revealed that he concealed these sessions from his father, the late producer Yash Johar, by claiming he was attending computer classes. His deception was reportedly nearly discovered at age 19 when his father asked him to use a computer, exposing his lack of computer familiarity. Johar linked his decision to pursue this training to a noted lack of counseling and awareness during that era.
