A public interest litigation (PIL) has been initiated in the Kerala High Court concerning the cover of author Arundhati Roy’s memoir, ‘Mother Mary Comes to Me’.
Filed by advocate Rajasimhan, the petition challenges the book’s cover, which depicts Roy smoking. It seeks either a comprehensive ban on the sale, circulation, and display of the memoir with its current cover, or the mandatory inclusion of a statutory health warning alongside the existing imagery.
Named as respondents in the litigation are the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Press Council of India, the Kerala Department of Health and Family Affairs, the book’s publishers Penguin India, and Arundhati Roy herself.
