Kolkata Police’s Cyber Crime Division has reportedly dismantled an alleged fake call centre, leading to the arrest of 17 individuals, including 16 women. The accused are alleged to have defrauded users of online dating and matrimony applications across India and Bangladesh. Victims were reportedly contacted through these platforms, lured with false promises, and subsequently coerced into transferring substantial sums of money. A case was filed on Tuesday, citing sections 66C and 66D of the IT Act, pertaining to identity theft and cheating by personation using a computer resource, alongside relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery.
