Fifty schoolchildren from the Sundarbans region are scheduled to participate in a special tram ride in Kolkata on Sunday, September 21, 2025. The event, named Sharadiya Tramjatra, is organized by Tramjatra, an initiative founded in 1996 by tram enthusiasts from Melbourne and Kolkata. Its stated purpose is to raise awareness regarding global warming and environmental sustainability. The participating children, from Bijoynagar Adarsha Vidyamandir in Gosaba, are expected to share their experiences during the journey. The initiative highlights a thematic connection between the threats of extinction faced by the Sundarbans mangroves and the diminishing presence of Kolkata’s historic tram system. Many of these schoolchildren have reportedly not previously seen or traveled in a tram. Currently, only two tram routes remain operational in Kolkata, and the future of the city’s tram infrastructure is subject to ongoing judicial proceedings.
