KTU Syndicate Meeting Postponed Following Member Abstentions Over Vice-Chancellor's Stance

A Syndicate meeting of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) was adjourned on Wednesday due to a lack of quorum. The absence of members resulted from government nominees, including senior bureaucrats, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) MLAs, abstaining from the meeting. Their abstention was in protest against the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, K. Sivaprasad’s, refusal to implement decisions made during the preceding Syndicate meeting held last month.

The contentious decisions included the Syndicate’s recommendation for the reappointment of former Registrar A. Praveen and former Controller of Examinations Ananda Resmi R. Vice-Chancellor Sivaprasad, however, stated that these reappointments were not feasible, citing that both individuals had concluded their deputation periods and left service. He further asserted that such appointments necessitate concurrence from Raj Bhavan. The statutory body had been scheduled to deliberate on significant issues, such as the proposed construction of a new administrative building, the renewal of the university’s software systems contract, and various academic matters.
