The Labour Party has reinstated the party whip for Members of Parliament John McDonnell and Apsana Begum, 14 months after its withdrawal. The MPs had initially lost the whip for their rebellion against the two-child benefit cap policy.

Their reinstatement followed a conversation with Labour’s chief whip, Jonathan Reynolds. This action follows similar reinstatements in February for four other MPs—Rebecca Long-Bailey, Ian Byrne, Imran Hussain, and Richard Burgon—who had also been suspended for rebelling on the same benefit cap issue.

The article also notes that several other former Labour MPs remain without the whip. In July, Rachael Maskell, Neil Duncan-Jordan, Brian Leishman, and Chris Hinchliff were suspended after repeatedly rebelling on welfare changes and openly criticizing government policies. Separately in July, Diane Abbott was suspended a second time following remarks she made regarding racism, having previously lost the whip for earlier comments on the subject.
