Louvre Director Addresses Security Lapses Following Jewelry Theft

The director of the Louvre Museum, Laurence des Cars, recently addressed the institution's security system following a jewelry theft. During a hearing with French senators, des Cars acknowledged that significant parts of the security infrastructure were outdated. She specified that the sole exterior camera near the thieves' entry point was positioned away from their approach. This meant the system did not detect the perpetrators arriving in a truck or using an electric ladder to access a second-floor balcony. Detection occurred only once the thieves had breached a window using power tools, resulting in a delay in the authorities' response time. Des Cars stated, "We didn’t spot the thieves’ arrival early enough," highlighting the identified security deficiencies.
