The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently dismissed a petition requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the Karur stampede. The court’s decision was based on the premise that the investigation by local Karur police into the incident was still in its initial stages. The stampede occurred on September 27 during a public rally featuring actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, resulting in the deaths of at least 41 people and injuries to over 100 others. In a separate action, the court also issued a notice regarding a plea seeking additional compensation for the victims, directing the Tamil Nadu government to file its response.
