Police have identified Jihad al-Shamie as the alleged perpetrator of an attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester. The incident resulted in the deaths of Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, after Shamie reportedly drove into a group of people before stabbing an individual. Three other individuals remain hospitalized, and three people arrested in connection with the event are currently in custody. Authorities confirmed that Shamie was not previously known to counter-terrorism police or referred to the British government’s Prevent de-radicalisation program.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood addressed the situation, stating that security arrangements would be reviewed. Mahmood also commented on pro-Palestinian protests that took place concurrently, expressing disappointment at their occurrence and urging the public to show solidarity with the victims’ families and the Jewish community. Approximately 40 arrests were made during these protests, with some individuals detained on suspicion of assaulting police.
