An international summit is underway in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with the Egyptian presidency stating its objective is to reach an agreement to end the war in Gaza. This two-hour conference coincides with U.S. President Trump’s departure from the Middle East, following visits to Israel and Egypt.

Following President Trump’s departure, regional powers are expected to address complex post-conflict issues. These include potential Hamas disarmament and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The conflict originated from a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October.

Egypt’s role is highlighted as crucial in facilitating President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, which envisions the reopening of Gaza’s border for aid and civilian exits. However, Egypt has expressed reservations regarding a significant influx of refugees across its borders. Regional discussions also encompass a desired role for the Palestinian Authority in Gaza, a concept Israel has reportedly opposed. Sustaining the cease-fire deal is viewed as dependent on understanding regional concerns.
