Monopoly: A Ninety-Year Legacy

The board game Monopoly recently marked its 90th anniversary, a milestone for the popular pastime known for simulating real estate acquisition and financial competition. The game’s historical roots trace back to The Landlord’s Game, devised in 1903 by Lizzie Magie, an anti-monopolist. Magie created this predecessor to educate players on Georgist principles, which advocated for collective ownership of land-derived rents and aimed to highlight the potential dangers of concentrated wealth and monopolies.

In observance of this anniversary, the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom has issued a commemorative 50 pence coin, available for purchase within a price range of £15 to £1,500. While Monopoly has gained a reputation for intense, competitive gameplay among participants, its original pedagogical purpose as a cautionary tale about economic monopolies is often less widely known.
