Multi-State Regulatory Actions Follow Suspected Cough Syrup-Related Child Fatalities

Authorities have initiated a multi-state response following a series of child fatalities suspected to be linked to the consumption of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup. Fourteen children in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, reportedly died from suspected renal failure after ingesting the syrup. A test report from the Tamil Nadu-FDA confirmed that a sample of ‘Coldrif’ was found to be adulterated. In response, the Madhya Pradesh government promptly banned the sale of the syrup, with the Tamil Nadu and Kerala state governments subsequently implementing similar bans and ordering the product’s removal from the market. The central government has additionally verified the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG) contamination in cough syrup samples from Madhya Pradesh as investigations continue into the child deaths, which have been associated with both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
