The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a central organization in India’s skill development framework, is facing intensified scrutiny after the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship filed a complaint with the Delhi Police. The complaint alleges “misappropriation at NSDC” against certain officials.
This development occurs several months after the NSDC board terminated its then-CEO. The corporation’s operational and governance mechanisms have been a subject of concern, notably highlighted in a 2015 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report which identified “serious issues in the governance and accountability mechanisms” within both the NSDC and the National Skill Development Fund (NSDF). Furthermore, multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged against NSDC’s training partners across the country, citing alleged tampering with attendance records.
As the NSDC pursues an ambitious objective to skill or up-skill 150 million people, challenges related to its management, training quality, and employment prospects are considered significant for the nation’s efforts to harness its demographic dividend.
