New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Sends Letter to Umar Khalid; US Lawmakers Request Fair Trial

Newly sworn-in New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent a letter to Umar Khalid, an activist currently incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar Jail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Khalid is an accused in the North East Delhi riots conspiracy case. Mamdani's communication reportedly referenced remembering Khalid and his meeting with Khalid's parents.

Khalid was recently granted provisional bail from December 16 to December 29 to attend his sister's wedding on December 27. His bail plea remains pending before the Supreme Court of India. In a separate development, eight U.S. lawmakers have appealed to the Indian Government, advocating for Khalid to receive a fair trial as per international law. The letter also noted that some of these lawmakers, including Rep. McGovern, had previously met Khalid's parents in December. McGovern stated on social media that Khalid has been imprisoned for over five years without trial. The Delhi Police, in opposing earlier bail requests, has characterized the February 2020 riots as an "orchestrated, pre-planned and well-designed" attack on India's sovereignty.
