Odisha Police Initiate Identification Efforts for Alleged Undocumented Foreign Nationals

The Odisha Police initiated coordinated operations across five districts, constituting an intensified effort to identify alleged unauthorized residents. Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan affirmed that the Odisha government, following directives from the Union government, has commenced identifying individuals from Bangladesh suspected of illegal residency, with intentions for legal action and eviction. On Tuesday, police operations took place in Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, and Puri districts. In Bhadrak, 17 individuals were detained. In Jagatsinghpur, four persons were arrested, and others were questioned, following the recovery of weapons, including a pistol, from a residence demolished on Monday. Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh issued instructions for heightened vigilance across all police stations after reports suggested the potential flight of suspects during the Jagatsinghpur operation, though no individuals were identified in Puri by Tuesday evening. Separately, a bandh led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Keonjhar resulted in the closure of businesses and educational institutions; however, police reported the day as peaceful with no major law-and-order incidents, remaining alert to concerns about alleged illegal residency.
