Pressure is mounting on the Albanese government to consider penalties for Optus following a recent service outage. This disruption has now been linked to at least four fatalities, including that of a 49-year-old man in Perth. The federal minister for emergency management stated the telco’s actions were “absolutely disgraceful” and referenced an earlier November 2023 outage that led to 18 governmental recommendations. She underscored the necessity for Optus to review its protocols and restore public confidence in the accessibility of triple-0 emergency services.
Optus Chief Executive Stephen Rue indicated that the company was not aware of the triple-zero call outage until receiving a customer notification around 1:30 PM on Thursday. Rue further noted that Optus’s initial priority was to determine facts and conduct welfare checks before notifying government bodies and the public.
