The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress regarding their shifting positions on the impact of the Special Integrated Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. A BJP representative noted that the SP previously stated the SIR led to a reduction in BJP votes, while the Congress had indicated it cut opposition votes. However, the BJP observed a recent assertion suggesting the SIR is now perceived to add votes. The party subsequently called upon the INDIA alliance, comprising the SP and Congress, to clarify their definitive stance on whose votes are being affected by the revision. The BJP also maintained that the SIR is a constitutional process executed with professional competence and a technical basis.
This political exchange follows allegations made by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who claimed that Uttar Pradesh BJP leaders possessed advance knowledge of voter exclusions from the draft electoral roll, thereby questioning the neutrality of the election body. The draft roll, published on January 6, reported the exclusion of 2.89 crore voters while retaining 12.55 crore names from an initial list of 15.44 crore. Yadav further advocated for linking voter information with Aadhaar to prevent alleged misuse of fake identification during elections and provided draft complaint formats to party workers for flagging reported irregularities.
