President Donald Trump announced on Saturday his decision to withdraw the nomination of Attorney Erik Siebert, citing Siebert’s reported receipt of “unusually strong support” from Virginia’s two Democratic senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner. Trump stated on Truth Social, “He did not quit, I fired him!”
The President’s announcement followed Mr. Siebert’s resignation from his post as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia on Friday. Reuters reported that his resignation occurred after administration officials privately informed him of a potential White House dismissal. Mr. Siebert had been supervising a criminal mortgage fraud investigation involving New York Attorney General Letitia James and, according to ABC News, had expressed doubts regarding the case’s strength.
Mr. Siebert was initially appointed as interim U.S. Attorney in January and subsequently nominated by President Trump for Senate confirmation after his temporary appointment expired.
