President Donald Trump made public statements regarding Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and proposed broad changes to immigration policy. These remarks followed a White House shooting incident where the suspect was identified as being from Afghanistan.

Via Truth Social, President Trump criticized Representative Omar, commenting on her religious attire and her country of origin, which he described as "decadent, backward, and crime-ridden." He also repeated an unproven allegation concerning her marital history, a claim that has been repeatedly debunked by fact-checkers. Trump additionally used derogatory language when referring to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. He further announced his intention to "permanently ban migration from all third world countries."

Representative Omar's biography indicates she was born in Somalia, fled its civil war at age eight, and spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before her arrival in the United States in 1995. Claims of her involvement in marital fraud for immigration purposes, which originated on a Somali-American message board in 2016, have been circulated by conservative activists. Trump has previously suggested that Omar should "go back" to Somalia.
