Recent developments in the Middle East highlight ongoing military operations, significant diplomatic shifts, and severe humanitarian consequences. More than three-quarters of the 193-member United Nations now recognize Palestine, a diplomatic shift reportedly accompanied by warnings to Israel against annexing parts of the West Bank in response. The Palestinian ambassador publicly expressed a positive reaction to the United Kingdom’s recognition of the state.
Regarding military activity, a former Israeli national security advisor and general indicated that Israeli forces are likely to conduct new attacks into parts of Gaza densely populated with displaced individuals, following the conclusion of their current offensive in Gaza City. In Gaza, Hamas-led authorities reportedly executed three men accused of collaborating with Israel, citing efforts to counter rising challenges from Palestinian militias they allege are working with Israeli support.
Humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain critical. The Gaza health ministry reported a cumulative death toll of at least 65,344 Palestinian people and 166,795 others injured in Israeli attacks since 7 October 2023. Additionally, two hospitals in Gaza City, the al-Rantisi children’s hospital and the eye hospital, have been declared “out of service” by Gaza’s health ministry following intense Israeli bombardment in their surrounding areas.
