Reliance Industries (RIL) announced on March 10, 2026, its intention to maximize Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) production from its refining and petrochemicals complex in Jamnagar. This effort is aimed at ensuring stable and reliable supplies for the domestic market. Simultaneously, the company confirmed plans to divert natural gas extracted from its KG-D6 basin to support priority sectors, in adherence to national energy priorities and government guidelines.
These company initiatives follow the Union Government's invocation of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, on the same day, concerning natural gas. The government cited disruptions to shipments stemming from escalating tensions in West Asia, which affect an estimated 30% of India's natural gas requirements passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Essential Commodities Act had also been invoked for LPG the previous week, instructing domestic oil refiners to prioritize and maximize the production of cooking gas for domestic consumers.
