Russia's state communications watchdog has issued a threat to entirely block access to the messaging application WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, should it fail to comply with Russian legislation. This ultimatum follows actions initiated in August, when Russia began limiting certain calls on both WhatsApp and Telegram. Authorities in Russia accuse these foreign-owned platforms of refusing to share critical information with law enforcement during investigations into cases of fraud and terrorism. WhatsApp has, in turn, alleged that Moscow is attempting to restrict secure communication for millions of Russian users.
