Sonagachi Residents Express Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revision

Residents of Sonagachi, Kolkata, are reportedly experiencing significant concern and confusion regarding their inclusion in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. The situation has led some individuals to express fears of exclusion from voter lists and contemplate relocation from the prominent red-light area.

The community initially gained voting rights in 2007 through a cooperative initiative that followed the formation of the Usha Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited in 1995. This historical effort allowed thousands of sex workers to obtain essential identification documents, including voter, Aadhaar, and PAN cards, after years of advocacy.

Currently, many residents report not finding their names on the SIR list, contributing to widespread apprehension. Sources indicate that a segment of Sonagachi's population includes individuals from neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal, which may add to the complexities faced during the revision process.
