Sriprakash Jaiswal, a former Union Coal Minister and veteran leader of the Congress party, passed away at the age of 81 in Kanpur on Friday evening after a prolonged illness. His political career included three terms as a Member of Parliament from 1999 to 2009.
During his tenure in the Manmohan Singh-led government, Mr. Jaiswal held key portfolios, serving as Union Minister of State for Home and later as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Steel. Prior to his central government roles, he was elected Mayor of Kanpur City in 1989 and led the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee as its President from 2000 to 2002. He was recognized for generally avoiding controversies and maintaining a strong connection with the local workforce in Kanpur.
Following his demise, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge issued a statement, acknowledging Mr. Jaiswal as a dedicated Congressman who worked consistently for the development and welfare of Kanpur. Uttar Pradesh Congress State President Ajay Rai also expressed sadness regarding the veteran leader's passing.
