Authorities in West Bengal have arrested one individual following damage to a Goddess Kali idol in the Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas. The incident on Wednesday reportedly led to local tension and protests, including a road blockade on a National Highway.
The arrested person, identified as Narayan Halder, has, according to the West Bengal Police, confessed to the desecration of the idol while in an inebriated state. Police officials have stated that, as of their current investigation, no political or communal link to the incident has been found.
To manage the escalating situation, which police attributed partly to "some outsiders" entering the area, the idol was safely removed and the highway cleared. Police teams have since been deployed to maintain peace and order, with authorities stating the situation is now normal. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has praised the police's swift response in apprehending the suspect and preventing potential communal tension.
