Acclaimed Telugu writer Lalita Kumari, known by her pen name Volga, has advocated for a retelling of Indian mythology to incorporate the inner worlds of women, who she notes have historically been overlooked. Volga clarified that her objective is not to challenge revered texts but to reimagine them from alternative viewpoints, aiming to deepen readers’ understanding of the characters’ emotional complexities. She referenced figures like Shabri as examples of women whose narratives could be further explored. Her notable work, “The Liberation of Sita,” reflects this approach. Addressing critics, Volga stated that reinterpretations are a long-standing component of cultural tradition, citing the numerous versions of epics that have evolved throughout history. She also mentioned that she has not encountered threats or censorship for her interpretations and emphasized the importance of respecting all citizens’ rights within a secular nation.
