Officials have reported the theft of several Roman-era statues from Syria’s National Museum in Damascus. The discovery was made early Monday when staff found a door broken from the inside. According to an anonymous official from the Syrian Ministry of Culture, the stolen artifacts are considered among the museum's oldest and most valuable, representing a significant blow to the nation's cultural heritage. This event potentially marks the largest single loss of antiquities since President Bashar al-Assad's overthrow last year. Brig. Gen. Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh, head of Damascus’s internal security forces, confirmed that authorities have initiated an investigation into the theft, which targeted "archaeological statues and rare collectibles."
