A recent peace proposal from President Trump, presented to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outlined terms for resolving the ongoing situation involving Hamas in Gaza. The plan stipulated that Hamas must release all remaining Israeli hostages within 72 hours, disarm, and relinquish any future role in the territory. Failure to comply would reportedly grant Israel a “free hand” to pursue the group.
In response to the ultimatum, Hamas announced its readiness to release all hostages but did not specify a timeframe for their release. The group also did not address the requirement to disarm and indicated a desire to discuss the plan’s details. This response drew interpretations from close observers, with Senator Lindsey Graham characterizing it as an “in essence, a rejection,” and Michael Herzog, a former Israeli ambassador to the United States, describing it as “a ‘no’ cloaked as a ‘yes’.”
