During this meeting, President Zelensky intends to advocate for the United States to provide Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles. This visit follows a recent phone call between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Trump reported “great progress” and announced an agreement for future face-to-face talks in Hungary. Discussions involving US and Russian teams are also slated to occur next week. President Trump had previously offered a non-committal “We’ll see…” when questioned about arming Ukraine with Tomahawks. After his call with Putin, Trump stated on social media that a significant portion of their discussion focused on “Trade between Russia and the United States when the War with Ukraine is over.” Separately, a Ukrainian official commented that recent Russian overnight strikes on Ukraine before the call “exposes Moscow’s real attitude toward peace.”
