United States Revokes Sanctions Waiver for Iran's Chabahar Port

The United States has revoked a sanctions waiver pertaining to Iran’s Chabahar Port, with the decision set to take effect on September 29, 2025. This waiver, initially granted in 2018, had allowed India and other nations to engage in the port’s development and operation without facing American penalties.

India has played a substantial role in the port, with India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) managing operations since December 2018. Further underscoring its involvement, India and Iran signed a ten-year agreement in May 2024 for long-term operational rights. The Chabahar Port is strategically significant for India, positioned as the closest Iranian port and facilitating regional trade and humanitarian efforts, including the 2023 delivery of wheat to Afghanistan.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has acknowledged the revocation and is currently evaluating its potential implications.
