A 62-year-old farmer was arrested on Friday in Modikuppam village, near Gudiyatham town in Vellore, on suspicion of cultivating cannabis plants on his farmland. The arrest followed a police search initiated based on a tip-off to Vellore SP A. Mayilvaganan, which led to the discovery of cannabis plants, reportedly six feet tall, concealed within a banana plantation.
The farmer, identified as B. Kannaiyan, was subsequently taken into judicial custody after being produced before a local court. Police seized the plants and registered a case. According to police statements, Kannaiyan reportedly admitted to cultivating the plants for several months, claiming he used the leaves in his food for their perceived medicinal qualities and distributed them to friends free of charge. He also reportedly stated he was unaware that growing the plants constituted an offense and denied selling any leaves. A probe into the matter is currently underway.
