Vladivostok: Pacific Characteristics and Moscow's Central Influence

Vladivostok, Russia’s principal maritime and trading hub on the Pacific, presents an appearance shaped by its proximity to Asia, evident in its cuisine, topographical urban layout, prevalence of right-hand drive vehicles sourced from Japan, and availability of Korean products. Despite these local influences, the city is characterized by its significant connection to Moscow, which shapes its preoccupations, cultural tenor, and urban appearance. This centralized influence is further illustrated by the involvement of two former mayors, previously serving sentences for corruption, who are now participating in the conflict in Ukraine, reportedly to secure commutation of their sentences. Thousands of other local residents, including many of Ukrainian descent, are also engaged in the conflict.
