Jewish Australians are preparing to mark the third anniversary of the 7 October attacks with commemorations planned across capital cities. Peak Jewish bodies have organized these events, with some locations kept private due to safety concerns following a December terror attack.
The anniversary coincides with planned pro-Palestine vigils, which have drawn condemnation from Labor state governments. The NSW premier, Chris Minns, described the planned vigils as ‘obscene’ and ‘designed to antagonize large sections of our community,’ though he noted legal restrictions on shutting down static protests.
In Melbourne, the Victorian premier, Ben Carroll, stated that police would act if any event breached anti-vilification laws. Events include a first-hand account from an Israeli soldier in Melbourne and various ceremonies and film screenings in other cities.
Pro-Palestine groups have also scheduled vigils and gatherings, with one group stating their event is a vigil to mark Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes on Gaza on 7 October 2023. Further rallies are planned in multiple Australian cities as part of a global day of action.
