The K.H. Patil Institute of Medical Sciences (KHPIMS) in Gadag recently hosted a workshop focused on multi-organ retrieval and kidney bench preparation. This training utilized soft-embalmed cadavers.
Organized by the Department of Anatomy in collaboration with the Karnataka Urology Association (KUA), the event on October 2 served as a pre-conference workshop for KUACON 2026, specifically on ‘Renal Transplantation and Dialysis Access’. KHPIMS stated this was the first such workshop using soft-embalmed cadavers at a government medical college in Karnataka.
The workshop offered participants practical experience in organ retrieval and transplantation procedures. The scientific program included sessions on cadaveric multi-organ retrieval, with a particular focus on kidney retrieval and preparation. Additional sessions covered vascular anastomosis, ultrasonographic mapping for arteriovenous fistula creation, and transplant kidney Doppler and angioplasty.
Urologists, transplant surgeons, and faculty members led the demonstrations and training. The institute indicated the workshop’s goal was to enhance cadaveric surgical training and connect anatomical knowledge with advanced surgical techniques. KHPIMS intends to organize more interdisciplinary cadaveric workshops with professional groups and expressed gratitude to body donors and their families for their consent.
