The Calcutta High Court has rejected a petition from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) concerning their Durga Puja bookstall. The party had sought protection against its alleged dismantling.
The court ruled that the party had not obtained the necessary permission from authorities to erect the temporary bookstall. This was despite the party depositing Rs 3,208 with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation when applying for permission.
The CPI(M) had asked the court to direct civic authorities to prevent the forcible removal or dismantling of their bookstall. The court noted that the party’s own actions in applying for permission demonstrated that such authorization was mandatory before setting up the stall.
