An estimated 63.43% of eligible voters cast their ballots in the inaugural election for the Silchar Municipal Corporation on Saturday. Officials reported that polling began slowly due to rain but gained momentum as the day progressed.
The highest voter turnout was observed in Ward 1 at 78%, while Ward 22 recorded the lowest at 50%. Polling proceeded without any reported incidents across the corporation’s wards. Elections were held in 40 wards, as candidates from two wards were elected unopposed.
A total of 133 candidates competed for positions in the newly upgraded municipal corporation, which became operational in June 2025 after a six-year period without an elected civic body. Key issues raised by candidates included poor road conditions, drainage problems, and inconsistent utility services.
The counting of votes is scheduled for October 6. The election represents a significant step for the city’s governance, following its upgrade to a municipal corporation in 2022.
