The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has ordered the removal of encroachments on public land to ensure safe passage for schoolchildren. The directive was issued to the secretary of the Karode grama panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district.
The commission intervened following complaints about obstacles on the Kuzhinjanvila-Thazhevila road, which is used by students to reach school. A tiled roof building, constructed on encroached land, was reportedly hindering safe walking for students and impeding the movement of school buses and other vehicles.
The commission has instructed various local authorities, including the Karode village officer, the grama panchayat secretary, and the Pozhiyoor station house officer, to take necessary action. The panchayat secretary can enlist the assistance of the station house officer to evict encroachers, in accordance with the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act.
Additionally, the Kerala State Electricity Board has been directed to urgently relocate an electricity post that obstructs travel. The commission also requested the vicar of St. Mary’s MSC church to move a church pillar situated at the road’s beginning. The complaint was initially filed by a local ward member.
