A court has sentenced Constance Marten, 38, and Mark Gordon, 51, to 14 years in prison each following their conviction for the gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn daughter. The couple received their sentences on Monday after being found guilty in a lengthy retrial at the Old Bailey in July.

Authorities discovered the decomposed body of their baby, Victoria, in a shopping bag in Brighton in 2023. This discovery followed a 53-day search for Marten and Gordon, initiated after officers found evidence of a recent birth in a burnt-out vehicle near Bolton. Presiding over the sentencing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC commented that neither defendant demonstrated significant consideration for their baby’s welfare or expressed genuine remorse.
