Following an order from Israel’s military for approximately 1 million residents and those sheltering in Gaza City to evacuate ahead of a new offensive, differing figures have emerged regarding the number of people who have relocated. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported over 250,000 individuals had departed, while Gaza’s civil defense agency stated a figure closer to 68,000.
Amidst this displacement from northern Gaza to the south, health authorities in Gaza declared their intention not to evacuate Gaza City’s primary operational hospitals, al-Shifa and al-Ahli. Doctors affirmed their commitment to remain with patients, a stance echoed by the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO), which pledged its workers would also stay in Gaza City. Doctors at al-Shifa, described as “barely functioning,” confirmed their decision to remain, with one indicating plans to ensure family safety in the south before returning to work.
The situation unfolds as fifty hostages are reported to remain in Gaza.
