The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to review a confidential report concerning Vantara on September 15. This report was submitted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was constituted on August 25 following petitions that alleged unlawful animal acquisition, mistreatment of animals in captivity, financial irregularities, and money laundering related to Vantara. The SIT, led by former Supreme Court Justice J. Chelameswar and comprising other former judicial, police, and customs officials, was mandated to conduct a comprehensive examination. Its scope included investigating the acquisition of animals, particularly elephants, from both domestic and international sources; assessing compliance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and zoo regulations; and verifying adherence to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and import/export laws concerning live animals. Furthermore, the SIT was directed to evaluate standards of animal husbandry and veterinary care, animal-welfare norms, causes of mortalities, and address complaints regarding climatic conditions and the facility’s location near an industrial zone.
