A 26-year-old postgraduate resident doctor at Sion Hospital was found deceased after reportedly self-administering an anesthetic. The doctor, who was pursuing a specialization in neurosurgery, had been on duty for nearly 11 hours at the time of the incident.
According to his father, the doctor had spoken about the demanding workload and stress at the hospital, including feeling intimidated by senior doctors and rushing to work due to fear of negative repercussions on his training. His father recalled instances of extreme exhaustion, with the doctor working from early morning until past midnight on some days.
The father also expressed concern about the financial penalty for quitting the postgraduate program, which amounts to Rs 20 lakh under Maharashtra government rules for leaving on mental health grounds. He had offered to sell family land to cover the cost, but his son declined.
Hospital authorities have filed an Accidental Death Report and are investigating the circumstances. The dean of Sion Hospital stated that the hospital management will review its support systems for students to prevent similar incidents, acknowledging the challenges of integrating a large number of students and the transition to hands-on clinical training.
