Europe must make significant decisions regarding frozen Russian assets, according to UK’s Miliband. He stated that Britain is prepared to collaborate with the European Union on this matter, emphasizing the importance of sending the correct signals to President Putin to avoid undermining security and the Ukrainian cause.
Miliband also highlighted the need for Europe to intensify its sanctions efforts. Poland’s Sikorski commented on the broader implications, suggesting that Europe’s global standing is at stake, questioning whether it will be a significant global player or merely a supplier of resources.
Discussions also touched upon the legal complexities of using frozen assets, with Belgium raising concerns about liability. The European Commission is reportedly working on a legal framework to share potential risks associated with these assets, aiming for a swift resolution.
Furthermore, Miliband stressed the importance of countering hybrid warfare, including disinformation, espionage, and cyber-attacks, by taking a more serious approach and utilizing available tools. He also reiterated that Russia is not winning the war in Ukraine, despite propaganda efforts.
