The Indian government is considering issuing an advisory to domestic airlines following a serious incident aboard a flydubai flight. Civil aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha stated that deliberations will be held to assess the need for enhanced security measures.
The incident involved a co-pilot allegedly attempting to seize control of the aircraft en route to Tel Aviv. The pilot-in-command, identified as Indian pilot Capt Smit Machchhar, reportedly sustained serious injuries while preventing the co-pilot’s actions. The ministry of external affairs confirmed Machchhar received initial treatment in Saudi Arabia and was later moved to Abu Dhabi.
During the event, the aircraft experienced a significant altitude drop over Saudi Arabia before landing safely. It is understood that two other pilots, traveling as passengers, assisted in managing the flight after the cockpit door was reportedly opened.
The exact nature of the co-pilot’s actions and the tools used are under examination. Discussions regarding potential advisories for Indian airlines are ongoing, with further decisions pending internal deliberations, according to Sinha.
