Inquest Opens into Asylum Seeker's Death on Bibby Stockholm

An inquest has commenced in Bournemouth concerning the death of Leonard Farruku, an Albanian asylum seeker whose body was discovered on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland Port on December 12, 2023.

During the proceedings, a statement from Mr. Farruku’s older sister, Marsida Keci, was presented to the court. Ms. Keci, along with her sister Jola, expressed that they have unanswered questions regarding the circumstances of their brother’s death. They specifically questioned why Mr. Farruku was transferred to the Bibby Stockholm, stating their belief that “his mental state was clearly not right.” The family also sought information on the mental health support available to individuals on the barge and a clear understanding of the events leading to his passing.

Mr. Farruku arrived in the UK on August 7, 2022, initially residing with relatives. Ms. Keci indicated in her statement that she was unaware of his subsequent transfer to the Bibby Stockholm barge, and that the family only learned details during the inquest process. The inquest is ongoing.
