A major oil refinery in Russia, identified as the Kirishi facility near St. Petersburg, was reportedly struck by drones early Sunday. The Ukrainian military stated its unmanned aircraft targeted the refinery, described as one of Russia’s largest and the primary major oil refinery in the country’s northwestern region, located approximately 500 miles from Ukraine.
According to Aleksandr Drozdenko, the governor of the Russian region, three drones were intercepted, and falling debris caused a fire at the plant. Mr. Drozdenko indicated the fire was extinguished by later Sunday morning, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
This incident follows recent reports, including Romania stating a Russian drone entered its airspace hours earlier and Poland reporting similar incursions by Russian drones into its airspace days prior, highlighting ongoing cross-border drone activity in the region.
