A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck India’s northeastern state of Assam on Sunday, September 14, at 4:41 PM IST. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the tremor’s epicenter in the Udalguri district, occurring at a depth of five kilometers.
The shaking was felt across Guwahati city and surrounding regions of Assam. Officials in Assam confirmed there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage to property. Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal publicly urged residents to “stay alert.”
Public reactions shared on social media described the earthquake as “terrifying” and notably prolonged, with one user likening the sensation to a bed “swinging like a cradle.”
