A 79-year-old man in Pune has been defrauded of Rs 11.92 lakh by a scammer impersonating an election official. The fraudster offered to assist the senior citizen with changing his partner’s name on her voter ID card.
The scammer instructed the man to fill out an electoral correction form, which appeared to be a standard procedure. However, this process led to two unauthorized bank transfers from the victim’s account to mule accounts, resulting in the significant financial loss.
Police are investigating how the fraudsters obtained the victim’s details, suspecting he may have submitted his initial request on a fake online platform. The victim had previously filled out an online form for the name change and provided his mobile number, after which he began receiving related messages and calls.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact method used to compromise the man’s bank account and initiate the fraudulent transactions. Authorities are working to identify the specific online platform used and the authentication methods exploited by the perpetrators.
