Prosecutors have begun outlining charges against Russell Brand, who is accused of multiple sexual offences, including rape and sexual assault. The alleged offences were committed against six different women between approximately 1999 and 2009.

The court heard that the women did not know each other and came forward independently. Their paths reportedly crossed with the defendant through employment, social events, or gigs where he was performing.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told the jury that the alleged offences occurred during a period when Brand’s career was flourishing, progressing from standup comedy to television presenter, actor, and Hollywood movie star. The circumstances of the alleged offences were described as varied, taking place in locations including a hotel room, workplaces, a toilet cubicle, and his home.

Karmy-Jones described Brand as “ruthless, calculated and manipulative,” and stated that his desire for sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious. She added that he could be charming when he wanted something, but was otherwise demanding and entitled. The prosecution stated that Brand was not deterred if women protested or did not have an opportunity to react to his advances.
