A Shanghai family court has granted custody of two girls, aged eight and ten, to their 81-year-old maternal grandfather, Wang. The children, born in the United States in 2015 and 2017, hold American passports and had been living in Shanghai with their mother and grandfather.
The custody ruling follows the death of their mother last year due to cancer. The case, which has garnered attention on Chinese social media, involved aspects of undisclosed parentage, including the suspected use of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and an unidentified father.
